Odinwell – Optical sensors for improved wound care

Ester Pörtfors, Marcus Andersson, Sofia dall'Orso

Innovation paves the way for prevention of infection risk in severe wounds

Major steps forward are now being made in the development of a ground-breaking medical technology product that can revolutionize the preventive care of difficult-to-heal and complicated wounds. The product is expected to be a valuable solution in wound care and operations with high risks of infection.

Odinwell, a Swedish MedTech company that develops optical technology to monitor and assess covered wounds, is behind the innovation. The company, originally a spin-off from Redsense Medical, became a separate company in 2021 and focuses on creating smart sensors for wound care dressings. Together with technical expertise from Together Tech, they are now taking big steps towards a prototype that can be displayed and tested by stakeholders in healthcare and collaboration partners.

Optical sensors for better wound care

"Our sensor will be able to monitor bacterial growth over time, directly in a wound dressing," says Marcus Andersson, CEO and CTO at Odinwell.

The sensors, based on optical technology, will not only be able to detect bacterial growth, but also potentially identify problems before they occur. This enables faster actions, which can reduce suffering, costs and antibiotic use in healthcare.

"Patients can wear the sensor at home while healthcare professionals monitor wound status remotely, which also eases the burden on healthcare and enables more efficient planning," continues Marcus Andersson.

  • Data analysis
  • Sensors
  • Prototype design
  • Test protocol
  • Documentation

Technical expertise that solves problems and drives forward

Technical expertise from Together Tech has played a decisive role in the development work. Two consultants with experience in product development for medical devices are now working on the project to design, manufacture and test the prototype. Both Sofia and Ester have multifaceted skills, from mechanical design to data analysis, sensors, prototype design, test protocols and documentation.

"Sofia and Ester have the ability to think outside the box when it comes to problem solving. That, combined with experience with medical equipment, leads development forward in a structured way and with short lead times. It has become a lucky match and it is very gratifying that we have been able to help Odinwell take important steps forward", says Gustaf Kabroo, sales and senior technical consultant at Together Tech, with a special interest in innovation.

Sustainability and future potential

Another aspect that is prioritized in product development is sustainability. Odinwell has actively worked to ensure that the electronics are reusable over several years and that they can be moved between patients. The sensor nodes in the wound dressings are made of plastic, without metals or dangerous chemicals.

"We are now waiting for the test results and to be able to take the product to the next phase together", conclude Marcus Andersson, Odinwell, and Gustaf Kabroo, Together Tech.
